The AQMG leads or performs the following functions:
- Provides leadership and direction on the full range of atmospheric chemistry simulation models,
dispersion models and other mathematical simulation techniques used in assessing source impacts and
control strategies through policies and guidance on the selection and use of models in regulatory
settings, and through collaboration with other EPA offices and Federal Agencies, Multi-State Organizations,
State, local, and Tribal agencies, and research institutions;
- Collaborates with ORD to foster and ensure the development of new models, techniques, modeling studies
and investigation of wider issues and atmospheric research to meet identified and anticipated policy and
regulatory needs (e.g., new applications, NAAQS decisions, exposure analyses, new NAAQS, cost effectiveness
determinations, etc.);
- Conducts modeling analyses integral to policy and regulatory decisions within the Office of Air and
Radiation for multiple pollutants, sources and spatial scales (e.g., international, national, regional, and local, etc.);
- Conducts modeling to identify and evaluate the linkages of local and regional air quality and climate,
and conducts modeling studies to assess future air quality under alternative climate regimes as well as
the sensitivity of control programs and policies;
- Evaluates and conducts validation studies on new models and simulation techniques for use by the air
quality modeling community and makes revisions to improve model applications in regulatory analysis and decisions; and
- Collaborates with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to obtain and apply meteorological
expertise and analytical inputs needed to support the use of atmospheric chemistry models, dispersion models and
other simulation techniques, the review and validation of new and revised models and the creation and distribution
of air quality forecasts across the nation.
